The process begins with bamboo selection. Only 3-5 year old bamboo is used — younger bamboo lacks strength, older bamboo becomes brittle. The chosen stalks are split, scraped, and boiled to remove natural sugars that could attract insects.
Next comes the most demanding step: strip preparation. A single tea set may use hundreds of meters of bamboo strips, each split to exact thickness. A master weaver can split a single bamboo segment into 100+ usable strips — a skill that takes years to develop.
The weaving itself follows patterns passed down through generations. Some are purely functional (tight weave for strength), others decorative (open weave for beauty). A medium-sized tea tray takes 3-5 days to complete.
